Most Employees are Successful When:
- Expectations
regarding the hours of work, dress standards, behaviour and performance
are clearly laid out and standard for all employees.
- One supervisor is designated for the new employee.
- Duties are well defined and a schedule of duties is established.
- Regular feedback on performance is given to the new employee.
Employees with a Developmental Disability may also Require:
- Consistent training and supervision at the work site for an adequate period of time.
- Clearly stated work priorities.
- Assistance whenever a change occurs in the duties, expectations, schedule or supervisor.
When Training an Employee with a Developmental Disability:
- Introduce each job step by step, providing practice time before introducing the next step.
- Give only one or two clear instructions at a time. Demonstrate wherever possible. Be prepared to repeat the instructions.
- Ask the employee to repeat your instructions or to demonstrate his/her understanding of the instructions.
- Review the instructions when a duty has not been done for a period of time.
- Provide both positive comments and constructive criticism to the employee on his/her performance.
